The volume of cargo handled by ports managed by the Estonian state-owned Tallinna Sadam (Port of Tallinn) grew by 0.3% in 2014 to 28.321 million tonnes, the company announced, cites LETA.
The December cargo volume was 2.45 mln tonnes, by 4% more than in 2013.
The company said that last year's positive result is mainly due to the increase of rolling stock and container volumes. Container traffic volume amounted last year to a record 260,193 TEUs, which is 2.6% over the previous year. The amount of goods transported in containers increased to 1.97 million tonnes, or 11.1%. 4 million tonnes of ro-ro cargo was shipped, by 8.6% more than the year earlier. The volume of the largest cargo group, liquid cargo totalled 18.9 million tonnes, remaining virtually unchanged. Mixed cargo volume increased by 6.9% 606.6 thousand tonnes.
Bulk cargo volume decreased by 13.9%, mainly because of fertilizers and gravel. At the same time, grain and coal transport grew 34.6% to 356,400 tons and by 97.15 to 127,500 tonnes.
In December, liquid cargo volume changed most, increasing by 5.1% to 1.7 million tonnes.
Cargo ships visited the ports of Port of Tallinn 1,982 and passenger ships 4,883 times.
